A Filmmakers News

A warm welcome to new members

I'm proud to say we've reach a membership base on "Fans Of Film" of 200, and a following on Twitter of over 2500. Thank you and thank yourselves for being involved in a new movement for indie filmmakers looking at independent labeling and distribution as a new viable model.

The more we come together in communities like this on the web, the more freedom we will have over the future of independent production and distribution. We're currently looking for independent content for review and distribution on our own "FOF HD PPV Network"

A special thanks to the filmmaking community in Albuquerque for being so proactive in it's own growth, and a very special thanks to the film community online as a whole. This would not be possible without you.

Another thing I'm very proud of is the launch of our green group, and green distribution seal of approval, allowing digital distributors to put this beautifully illustrated and designed seal of approval on their website in support of green distribution. Join our green group on FOF http://www.fansoffilm.com/group/filmg.

Filmmaking is a change for me in some ways but in some ways not. As a 20 year artist I consider myself a master in certain mediums such as glass blowing, and water color painting. Reflecting back as a beginner in glass and the first two years of mistakes while teaching myself, that's how I fill right now has I go into my 3rd year of being an aspiring filmmaker. And yes I'm making less mistakes, and seeing real progress in my efforts for myself and for "Fans Of Film"

FOF keeps getting real attention from all over the world, and growing support from the city of Albuquerque. Such as the Albuq film office and local businesses like "LiquidLightPharm" one of the finest suppliers of fresh and locally grown wheatgrass in the state. and supplying fine organic stores, such as "Sun Flower Markets" and La Montanita co-op with their new on the go frozen shots, and now providing special delivery for the film community. Also Locally owned "Reel Solutions" providing the most experienced and professional concierge service to the growing film and entertainment industry in New Mexico.

For myself I'm currently working as a producer on a independent debut project called "LOCKED A Chicano Film Series" A production by Tito Chavez @ http://tiguex.com and you can also find them on Fans Of Film @ http://www.fansoffilm.com/group/lockednewmexico, and Myspace http://www.myspace.com/LockedNM

I'm also working on my own debut feature film called "2013 After The Dead" and recently had an early script release of witch you can read at http://2013afterthedead.com

Regards from a filmmaker that's not just thinking about himself, but wants to be a rising tide for filmmakers everywhere.

Green Seal Of Approval For Digital Distribution

FOR RELEASE!
By Michael Palombo

Making a dream a reality, beyond the life changing experience of stepping into the film industry in 2007, it's truly been a roller coaster of a ride. Lets go beyond being a 20 year artist and trying to understand the medium of film making for myself as an aspiring filmmaker/producer working on my own productions/art.

Distribution! better yet green distribution, as we move into age of real concern for our environment, and our impact on this great planet we call home. I'm proud to release the
"Green Seal Of Approval For Digital Distribution" A contract will go with this seal asking for the true value of DVD's to be enforced including environmental impact "yet to be valued" and the main form of digital distribution being in the form of downloads and on-demand video. I started a green distribution campaign August 2008 with setting up a blog filmmakersgogreen.blogspot.com and soon after posting my idea on the very popular ideablob.com website. So this is not a new thing, it's something thats been in the works for over a year. We also have a production idea on the board for a documentary on "The Life Of A DVD" for those filmmakers, producers, and writers that might read this, it needs funding and script

Over the last year I have committed all my spare time and late nights to understanding yet another medium. The computer world and how it's being used for marketing and distribution. At the same time developing a network and distribution model, with the launch of "Fans Of Film" in November of 2008, With the experience of facilitating and networking thefilmmakerschannel.com and the martialarts-channel.com. I've come to understand a great deal about the future of the web, and the opportunities it's opening up for independent filmmakers and producers. As a result of all of this, the phone has started to ring with filmmakers, producers asking for consultation, pod casters asking for interviews. Today I'm going to be on a live show called "Blog Talk Radio"
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/ ... So yes I think I'm headed in the right direction and making waves in a new age of independent production and distribution. I think it's going to be a great year, and I'm looking forward to working with all the people that shown interest and those to come. So join us on fansoffilm.com for a movement are better yet a revolution!

How Fans Of Film can support local content creators and businesses.

By Michael Palombo
How Fans Of Film can support content creators and businesses.
While at the same time creating a business model for itself, without trying to profit from the revenue of content being sold by artist.

It's my belief, fansoffilm.com will become a viable and thriving network of independent filmmakers, businesses, artists, really the list goes on.
I say this with extreme confidence as we watch millions of people switch from cable to the internet over the next few years. Also the success of a no-name network called HULU.com, has changed everything. This has every major network across the world re-thinking the old model of distribution.

With the support of the filmmaking community, fansoffilm.com could very quickly become a network that supports content creators of all genres. While at the same time supporting business, by connecting content creators and businesses for product placement and commercial advertising. We are already seeing an explosion in geographical and cultural community networks on the web separating themselves from just being a blip on Facebook.

What this means is the money will get spread more threw the local economy, instead of one network controlling the commercials and making all the profit. You will now have many content creators controlling the product they want to market, and the content creator makes all the profits, "spreading the wealth" Fans Of Film will make it's profits by providing a directory for business and content creators that will have a monthly subscription rate for businesses.

Beyond the ability for anybody to set up a profile, on fansoffilm.com, and advertise, distribute goods/films from their own profile. Fans Of Film also has it's own official program listing,
In my opinion trying to make profit from the sales of content is to controlling and confining in the ways of management. And limits your true ability to expand and support other content. By letting independent filmmakers, producers, distributors control their own content and get all the profits from that, "Fans Of Film" will not be held back by in-house issues that most expanding companies face. Fans Of Film will make its profits by providing the market/network listing, while charging a monthly subscription rates to list content, in the official program/film list.
If you would like to be Fans Of Film instant friend, here is a personal invite to Fans Of Film http://www.fansoffilm.com/?xgi=9jzodDT
Sincerely

What it means to be Independent

At a time when independent artists in the music industry have more power and control over their careers than ever before, "What is INDIE?" tries to determine just what it really means to be 'indie'.

In defining what it means to be 'indie', as well as looking at the changing landscape in the music industry, the film ends up being a rallying cry for indie artists, and has been hailed as 'inspiring' and 'empowering' by artists worldwide.

The film features interviews with indie music experts including Panos Panay (Founder of Sonicbids), Derek Sivers (Founder of CD Baby) and Suzanne Glass (Founder of Indie-Music.com), as well as with 20 artists including Ember Swift and Paul Cargnello.

The Future Of The Web

If your a filmmaker "read this" your future may depend on it

Written by David Tow

By 2020 Web 2.0- The Social Web- will have developed into a complex multimedia interweaving of ideas, knowledge and social commentary, connecting over three billion people on the planet. In combination with the Semantic Web 3.0 it will automatically analyse, interpret and create new forms of layered knowledge beyond the world of today's blogs, wikis, social networks and virtual worlds.

Over the next decade these early trends will continue to evolve at a frenetic pace- social networks will both fragment and unify, catering to special groups, but also overlapping and creating within the next few years a global social network of networks. At the same time, social networks and virtual worlds such as Second Life will converge, along with powerful simulation technology, to create the first realistic virtual realities.

By 2030, Web 3.0- advanced versions of the Semantic Web- will have made many important contributions to new knowledge through network relationships, logical inference and artificial intelligence. It will be powered by a seamless, computational mesh, enveloping and connecting most human life and will encompass all facets of our social and business lives- always on and available to manage every need. It will connect not only most of the 8 billion individuals on the planet, but also link with other biological and artificial life forms, as well as countless everyday electronically controlled objects. The Semantic Web and Intelligent Web will have combined.

By 2040 Web 4.0- the Intelligent Web- will be ubiquitous- able to interact with the repository of almost all available knowledge of human civilisation- past and present, digitally coded and archived for automatic retrieval and analysis. Web 4.0 will mark the beginning of a new intelligent entity- a sentient and cognisant multidimensional network, powered not only by billions of ultra-fast tiny processors and unlimited communications bandwidth, but by the first quantum computers, capable of processing trillions of operations in parallel. Human intelligence will have co-joined with advanced forms of artificial intelligence, creating a higher or meta level of knowledge processing. This will be essential for supporting the complex decision-making and problem solving capacity, required for civilisation's future progress.

By 2050 Web 5.0- The Wise Web- will have emerged, embedding all biological and artificial life within a global cooperative intelligence. All critical decisions affecting our planet and life, including those relating to global warming, sharing vital resources and the ethical resolution of conflict and human rights, will be guided by this global intelligence.

The Wise Web will mark the beginning of a new threshold in human civilisation- a new form of global consciousness- in which all life will be embedded.

Filmmakers News-Letter

Hi John
My name is Michael Palombo 41 year old male, I work In the film industry “New Mexico” also a starving artist. Committing myself to the life of an Entrepreneurs, with my website filmmakershelp.com, offering services that put filmmakers into business for themselves. I have yet to see anybody offer a solid business model “for filmmaker” that puts the filmmakers first, "across the board" When I say across the board, I mean full control, with no contracts and 0% payout from the filmmakers.

We believe this model puts the filmmaker first and the fans. With an opportunity for the fans to become distributors themselves with our new “adopt a film program” cutting out Hollywood all together. Here is one of our latest news-letters
Maybe this is a story worthy of LA Times.

Filmmakers Channel Newsletter
by Anthony DellaFlora

It's been quite a month so far. We announced the official launch of the channel in the media and have had a gratifying response.
We were featured on the New Mexico Business Weekly site in a great article by Megan Kamerick, which went national, and we made the 10 p.m. news on Saturday, Nov. 15 on local ABC affiliate KOAT-TV. Thanks to reporter Royale Da for that.Gene Grant wrote us up in his latest Albuquerque the Magazine film column.

The Filmmakers Channel will also be featured in Accent Magazine in December and a piece is forthcoming from film industryreporter Dan Mayfield at the Albuquerque Journal.
Meanwhile, our publicity efforts for The Filmmakers Channel have been reaching around the world. Inquiries have come in from filmmakers and distributors all over the United States, Spain,England, France, Germany and Cyprus, among others.

Films and Partners
We are expanding at a rapid pace. The Filmmakers Channel is partnering with Florida-based martial artist Lee Barden to create the Martial Arts Channel (thanks to Michael Palombo at Filmmakers Help.

Others partners include

1. Jay Weidner of Sacred Mysteries to offer their entire collection, featuring movies about Mayan prophecies and other esoteric subjects.
2. International Social Action Film Festival, which will launch early next year,
3. The Bleep Store, offering David Sereda's, "The Voice," and soon "Change Your Brain"
4. Douglas Gilles of East Beach Press who are broadcasting their critically acclaimed film "On The Edge."
5. Illuminated Media - A full length film about enduring change through faith called "Broken"
6. Fade to Grey Films - A 20 minute short about about recognizing and confronting evil.
7. Diamond Film Company - A powerful and somewhat controversial, though hopeful film about abuse in the Black Church.

In addition The Filmmakers Channel has also helped raise funds for the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary by selling a video by Managing Director Leyton Cougar online and we are in discussion with the the KingDomWood Christian Film Festival to launch the Christian Film Channel early next year.
Distribution News
One of the challenges we face conveying the idea to filmmakers that the status quo system of distribution is disintegrating and re-ordering on an almost daily basis: what you thought you knew about distribution does not apply any longer.

In the midst of this chaos is the opportunity for independents to take the reins of their own distribution. This interview with noted indie producer Ted Hope says it about as succinctly and forcefully as we've seen. I particularly love the line about "parasitic gatekeepers." maker profile to help promote your Film.

Editorial: The Filmmakers Channel Position in the Distribution Vortex
by Dan Latrimurti
You are receiving this newsletter for any number of reasons, but on some level you too recoginize that the system of films distribuiton is going through a rapid and intense evolution. We believe that it is more of along the lines of a gestation moving towards revolution then evolution because the tools that are becoming available and are offered here shifts power from the big "mega flix" distrbuitors to the filmmakers and on line distributors that can get your film in front of targeted eyeballs.

Our philosophy is simple. We believe that when it comes to getting your film(s) distributed and sold that there isn't anyone in the world that has your best interest in mind more then you.

As much as we would love to guarantee all filmmakers on line distribution success through our initiatives, the reality is that we cannot. Even with a "mega portal" website some films will languish and receive little attention. Why? Not because their film isn't worthy, it is because a 'mega portal' distribution strategy obsolete and not capable of getting your film in front of the most interested audience. A mega portal can't do it, but with the right technology and information you can.

Our job is to provide any filmmaker that wants to take responsiblity for their distribution success with the technology that will allow them to apply their media across the internet so that the people who care about it get a chance to see it. This is what we mean by Audience Direct Distribution of Independent Films and Alternative Media that Pays Filmmakers First.

Fans Of Film

By Michael Palombo
Online theaters vs. walk-in theaters and the future of

Online theaters are popping up with sites like jaman.com, thefilmmakerschannel.net, outlawfilmchannel.com and future sites like your very own fansoffilm.com. The list is growing as if there was a movement toward Internet distribution for filmmaker’s. Well yeaa! and can walk-in theaters keep up.

Clue in filmmakers and fans. The content is growing every day on the Internet, I repeat growing” So if you’re a filmmaker you should be putting your content up before it’s too late. What that means for fans, is new content is being added to the Internet every day, and more fans, seeking new content on the Internet.

So yes there is a film movement online, and filmmakers are finding all kinds of venues to market themselves and their films. The big question, is what is the best way? One word independent! Yes independent and stay that way no matter what netflix offers or any other for that matter. You would be stupid to sale-out now, when the future is here for indie labels. Custom paypal video services like the one filmmakershelp.com provides. That’s embeddable anywhere, that means viral video. It also means the filmmaker gets paid first no matter where is video might be on the web. I mean think about it if your video goes viral you could have thousands of people pay-per-viewing you film all at the same time, and you get paid first, and you make all the money.

This is what I predict for the future of online theaters. The most popular ones of course will be the ones with the most content, and best design. But filmmakers beware of the cost to putting your film on any distribution site/theater site. I see a future trend toward independent labeling and distribution. So I believe sites that supports different I-frames/video players, and is free for a filmmaker to put up a profile and distribute his or her movie from that online theater, those will be the most popular for filmmakers. Theaters can make its revenue from sponsored ads, and even membership dews, for those more popular sites “But not of the filmmakers” Sites that pay you first. That’s an independent online theater that truly supports “art/indie films” putting the filmmaker first, paying the filmmaker first. That will be the future of online theaters.
In my opinion.

YouTube to Show Full-Length Films by Year End?

Thursday, November 6th, 2008;
-- Jordan McCollum |

The most popular video site on the web, YouTube has long been in negotiations with movie studios to stream full-length feature films. And while there are still a lot of details to be hammered out, sources say that the deal could be complete in thirty to ninety days, according to CNET reports today.

Among the major sticking points, as with everything else on YouTube, is finding the right way to monetize full-length films. According to two studio sources, YouTube parent Google is insistent upon one particular form, though they didn’t say whether that was preroll, postroll or overlays. And of course, there’s still the issue of balancing enough advertising to make it worthwhile to the site and the studio without driving away the viewers.

And here’s something I never thought I’d say: YouTube’s major competition in this area will come from none other than Hulu. Hulu has totally pwned come to dominate the long-form video market online, with high quality streaming. As CNET points out:

A showdown between Hulu and the 3-year-old YouTube was inevitable. Consider that Hulu, the joint video venture formed by NBC Universal and News Corp., attracts only a fraction of the 80 million people who visit YouTube each month, but Hulu still managed to generate nearly the same revenue in its first year in business, according to reports.

Naturally, that strength for YouTube—audience size—is a big reason why the studios have turned to YouTube instead of Hulu.

There is a little bit of precedent for the YouTube deals as well. In July, YouTube announced a partnership with Canadian film company Lionsgate. This partnership yielded film previews from Lionsgate with links to purchase the full-length film for download.

What do you think—will YouTube become the long-form streaming video destination, will they split the market with Hulu, or will the deal never materialize?

5 Reasons to Finally Ditch Cable

How many times have you opened up your monthly bill from Comcast or Time Warner and thought, that’s it, I’m ditching my cable — only to keep on paying? Well the time has come. With countless ways to watch your favorite shows online, ditching cable has never been easier. And with the economic crisis tightening its grip, there’s never been a better time to save some money.

Chances are there’s already a line-up of customers at your cable company’s local office looking to returning their Motorola boxes. The Wall Street Journal this week did, after all, declare that being off the cable grid is now socially acceptable. As much as 20 percent of all TV viewers watch shows online, the paper reported, and half of those people don’t watch TV at all anymore. Still not convinced? No worries, we have five good reasons to finally cancel your cable subscription.

  1. The fundamentals of our economy are screwed. Seriously, do you want to keep sending hundreds of dollars per year to your cable company while your retirement fund tanks? Four out of five American households pay an average of $70 a month for cable or satellite TV, according to the WSJ. Do you really want to be one of them?
  2. There are a ton of ads. Sure, we’re willing to sit through a few of them, preferably entertaining ones, to get content for free. But network and cable TV are increasingly oversaturated with them. Hulu & Co., on the other hand, have far fewer ads. A typical half-hour show features eight minutes of ads on TV, but only two minutes online. That’s six minutes you can spend looking at web sites like ours, making our advertisers happy.
  3. Cable boxes suck. The simple truth is that cable companies are used to competing with pretty much no one, which is why their technology is horribly outdated. The web is full of complaints about Comcast’s DVR, and even newer boxes like Verizon’s FIOS HD DVR don’t stand a chance against TiVo’s interface. On the other hand, there are tons of new and cheap devices that bring online TV into the living room. The soon-to-be-opened-up Roku box is only $99, and it’s easier than ever to download movies through your TiVo, XBox or Apple TV.
  4. There are so many other options. Hulu, NBC Direct, Amazon, the iTunes Store, Joost and Netflix Streams will all let you watch TV shows and movies free or very cheap. As the WSJ noted, 90 percent of all network shows and 20 percent of all cable shows are available online. Sure, there are some hold-outs, and networks like Showtime generally don’t make shows like Weeds available until after the end of the season. Some of our shadier friends tell us that you can always find everything right away on those torrent sites, but we of course wouldn’t know anything about that.
  5. Hulu can save your marriage. People tend to argue that online TV is inferior because you can’t watch it on your living room tube. That tends to be true for most people, but it can also be a good thing. Chances are you and your spouse are busy web workers, which means you’ll both be hammering away on your notebooks while The Daily Show is running in the background. You might as well be sitting in different rooms. Remember the times when watching TV used to be a shared experience? You can go back to that. Just cancel cable, turn off the TV and cuddle up in bed watching Hulu. You’ll thank us later.
